I often see government bodies asking for more restrictions on liberty for individual citizens. Often there is a consultation by a government body such as a regulator asking for new regulations, increased powers and penalties. Many of the respondents will be other Government agencies and bodies such as tax departments, other regulators, and individuals employed by the Government such as professors in public universities. I find this deeply troubling - there are inherent conflicts that do not appear to be managed. The 'Guardians' are demanding and getting more power over citizens by agreement amongst themselves (and a compliant Government to sign off). Under liberal democratic theory I would think the servants of the people should not be allowed to decrease the liberty of the people? Welcome your thoughts.
